Crested Gecko Care Guide

🦎 Complete Crested Gecko Care Guide

🏆 VITAL STATS & DIFFICULTY
Experience Level: Beginner
Max Size: 8–10 Inches (including tail)
Lifespan: 15–20 Years
🏗️ Enclosure & Vertical Volume

Crested Geckos are arboreal, meaning they spend their lives in trees. Vertical space is more important than floor space.

Minimum Enclosure Dimensions:

  • Juveniles: 12" x 12" x 18" glass terrarium.
  • Adults (Standard): 18" x 18" x 24" (Minimum).
  • Adults (Optimal): 18" x 18" x 36" (Modern standard for active geckos).

Glass enclosures are best for holding the necessary humidity, provided they have a mesh top for ventilation.

⚠️ SOLITARY ANIMAL WARNING

Crested geckos should be housed alone. Males will fight to the death. Females may compete for resources, leading to tail loss and chronic stress. Single housing is always the safest path.

☀️ Low-Intensity UVB & Ferguson Zones

While Crested Geckos are nocturnal, research shows they benefit significantly from "cryptic basking" in Zone 1 levels of UV.

Ferguson Zone Classification:

  • ★ Zone 1 (Crested Geckos): Shade dwellers/Cryptic baskers. Target UVI range: 0.5 to 1.0.
  • Zone 2+: Excessive for this species; can cause skin stress and eye damage if shade is not available.

UVB Requirements:

  • Type: T5 HO Linear Tube (ShadeDweller style).
  • Strength: 2.4% to 7% (Arcadia ShadeDweller).
  • Coverage: Only cover 1/3 of the enclosure to ensure a total UV-free "night zone" is available even during the day.

📐 The "Mesh Factor" (Lighting Precision)

Crested Geckos are sensitive to over-exposure:

  • Over-Mesh: A 7% ShadeDweller on top of a mesh lid at a distance of 10-12" from the top basking branch is ideal.
  • Under-Mesh: Mounting inside is not recommended for this species due to the risk of contact burns on the gecko's sticky feet.
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity Cycles

Crested Geckos are temperate animals. They are far more likely to die from overheating than from being slightly too cool.

Requirement Specification
Daytime Ambient 72°F - 77°F
Nighttime Drop 65°F - 70°F
Basking (Optional) Max 82°F
Humidity (Day/Dry) 50% (Allow it to drop)
Humidity (Night/Mist) 80% - 90% (Spike)
CRITICAL UPPER LIMIT NEVER ABOVE 85°F
Pro Tip: Do not mist 24/7. The enclosure MUST dry out to ~50% during the day to prevent respiratory infections and skin rot.
🥣 Frugivorous Diet & CGD Standards

Crested Geckos are unique because they can live entirely on a high-quality **Crested Gecko Diet (CGD)** powder mixed with water.

Dietary Components:

  • CGD Staples: Pangea or Repashy. These are nutritionally complete.
  • Insects: Dust with Calcium + D3. Offer crickets or dubia roaches 1x-2x weekly for growth and enrichment.
  • Avoid: Baby food or pure fruit purees (these cause MBD due to lack of calcium/vitamins).
⚠️ WARNING: CALCIUM CRASH

If you only feed fruit or insects without CGD, your gecko will develop Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD), resulting in a soft jaw, kinked tail, and eventual death.

🌿 Substrate & Bioactive Potential

Substrate must hold moisture without growing mold. Crested Geckos are the #1 candidate for bioactive setups.

Recommended Options:

  • ABG Mix: (Tree fern fiber, charcoal, sphagnum, peat). The gold standard for live plants.
  • Coconut Fiber: Good for humidity, but can be dusty if it dries out.
  • Paper Towels: Mandatory for the first 30-90 days of quarantine to monitor health.
Note: If not bioactive, change the substrate every 2-4 months to prevent bacterial buildup in the humid environment.
📝 Maintenance & Handling Rules
Daily: Mist heavily at night; lightly in the morning.
Daily: Provide fresh water in a bowl (they do drink from bowls!).
Every 2 Days: Provide fresh CGD (remove old food to prevent mold).
Handling: Use the "Hand-over-Hand" (treadmill) method. Do not grab the tail.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Do they really not need a heat lamp?If your home stays between 72°F-75°F, they are fine. If your home drops below 65°F, you need a low-wattage Ceramic Heat Emitter.
Why did my gecko's tail fall off?Stress, being grabbed, or a loud noise can cause "caudal autotomy." It does NOT grow back in Crested Geckos (unlike Leopard Geckos).
Why is my gecko not eating its powder food? They have tiny stomachs (the size of their eye). You may not see lick marks. Check for "poop" to confirm they are eating.
Can I feed them mealworms?Yes, but only as a treat. Soft-bodied insects like crickets or dubia nymphs are better staples.
Do they have eyelids? No. They lick their eyes to keep them moist and clean.
How do they stick to glass?Millions of tiny hairs called "setae" on their toe pads allow them to stick via Van der Waals forces.
My gecko is sleeping on the ground. Is that okay?Occasionally, but if it happens constantly, it might be too hot at the top or there aren't enough hiding spots.
What is "Floppy Tail Syndrome" (FTS)?When a gecko hangs upside down and its tail flops over its back, eventually deforming the pelvis. Add more horizontal resting spots.
Are they nocturnal or crepuscular?Technically nocturnal, but they are most active at dusk and dawn.
Can I use a red light at night? No. It disrupts their sleep and they can see the light, which stresses them.
What are "Calcium Sacks"?Small white pockets in the back of their mouth where they store extra calcium. Check these to monitor female health.
How often should I mist?Usually once at night (heavy) and once in the morning (light). The cage must be dry by mid-afternoon.
Why is my gecko turning white/grey?It is about to shed. Humidity should be spiked slightly to help the process.
Can they eat citrus fruit? No. Citrus can interfere with calcium absorption. Stick to CGD flavors like mango, papaya, or watermelon.
What is "Fired Up" vs "Fired Down"?"Fired up" is when their colors are vivid and dark (usually when active or humid). "Fired down" is when they are pale (usually when sleeping).
