🏗️ Arboreal Enclosure & Airflow Science

Pink Toed Tarantulas (Avicularia avicularia) are strictly arboreal (tree-dwelling) spiders from the Amazon basin. The most critical factor in their survival is cross-ventilation.

Minimum Enclosure Dimensions:

  • Slings (Babies): Small plastic vial with side-holes.
  • Adults: 12" x 12" x 18" Vertical Enclosure.

Traditional "fish tanks" or top-opening jars are death traps for this species. Without holes in the sides of the enclosure, stagnant air will lead to "Sudden Avic Death Syndrome."

⚠️ CROSS-VENTILATION WARNING

A screen top is NOT enough. You MUST have ventilation holes on the sides of the enclosure to create a draft. Without this, the high humidity required will turn into a bacterial "death soup."

☀️ Lighting & The "Invertebrate Ferguson Zone"

While tarantulas do not "bask" in the traditional sense, research suggests arboreal species benefit from a low-intensity UV cycle and high-CRI lighting to simulate the forest canopy.

Ferguson Zone Equivalent (Shadow Dwellers):

  • ★ Zone 1 (Avicularia): Low-light/Shade dweller. Target UVI range: 0.1 to 0.5.
  • Function: Regulates the circadian rhythm and aids in successful molting cycles.

UVB/Lighting Requirements:

  • Type: 2.4% or 5% UVB (ShadeDweller) placed above the enclosure.
  • Plants: Live plants require a 6500K LED, which also provides a natural day/night cycle for the spider.
🌡️ Temperature & Tropical Humidity

Pink Toes thrive in "room temperature Plus" conditions. They are sensitive to extreme heat.

Requirement Specification
Ambient Day Temp 75°F - 82°F
Ambient Night Temp 68°F - 72°F
Target Humidity 70% - 80%
CRITICAL LOWER LIMIT 65°F (Sluggish/No feeding)
CRITICAL UPPER LIMIT 88°F (Heat Stress/Death)
Pro Tip: Do not mist the spider directly. Mist the side walls and the web once or twice a week to provide drinking droplets.
🦗 Insectivorous Diet & Hydration

Pink Toes are active hunters that prefer "flying" prey or insects that climb the walls of their enclosure.

Feeding Schedule:

  • Slings: Flightless fruit flies or pinhead crickets every 3-4 days.
  • Adults: 3-5 Large crickets or a medium Dubia roach every 7-10 days.

Hydration:

A water dish must be glued to the side of the enclosure high up (elevated). Most Pink Toes will rarely come to the ground to drink.

⚠️ MOLD WARNING

Remove uneaten prey after 24 hours. In a humid enclosure, dead insects grow mold rapidly, which can be fatal to tarantulas.

🌿 Substrate & Molting Safety

Substrate for an arboreal spider is primarily for humidity control, not burrowing.

Recommended Mix:

  • 70% Coconut Fiber / 30% Sphagnum Moss.
  • Keep it damp (not soaking) to provide a humidity buffer.

The Molt:

When your tarantula flips onto its back inside its web, **DO NOT TOUCH IT.** It is molting. This process can take 2–12 hours. Any disturbance can be fatal.

📝 Maintenance & Behavior Checklist
✅
Daily: Check for "boluses" (chewed-up insect remains) and remove them.
✅
Weekly: Clean and refill the elevated water dish.
✅
Monthly: Check the substrate for any signs of mold or fungal growth.
✅
Annual: Replace the top 2 inches of substrate if not bioactive.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Are they venomous?Yes, but their venom is mild, comparable to a bee sting. They are not considered medically significant to humans.
Do they bite? They are very docile. Their first defense is to jump away or "shoot" excrement at you. Biting is a very last resort.
Why is my spider sitting in its water dish? This is a sign the enclosure is too dry. Increase humidity immediately.
What is "SADS"?Sudden Avic Death Syndrome. It's almost always caused by high humidity combined with poor airflow.
Can they jump?Yes, and quite far! Always keep the enclosure doors closed and be mindful during maintenance.
Why hasn't my spider eaten in 3 weeks? It is likely in "Premolt." Its abdomen will look dark and shiny. Stop offering food until it molts.
How do I sex a Pink Toe?Males have "emboli" on their pedipalps (look like boxing gloves) and tibial hooks when mature.
Can I hold my tarantula? You can, but it's not recommended. They are fragile, and a fall from even 3 feet can burst their abdomen.
What are "urticating hairs"?Defensive hairs they can rub off their abdomen. Avicularia don't "flick" them like other species but have them on their body.
Do they need a heat lamp?Usually no. If your home stays between 70-75°F, they are fine. If it's colder, use a space heater for the room.
Why is it building a "tube" web? This is natural. They build thick silk hammocks or tubes near the top of the cage to hide and molt.
Can I keep two together? No. They are cannibalistic. Single housing only.
Is sponge in the water bowl okay? No! Sponges harbor bacteria. Use a clean, shallow dish of fresh water.
How long after a molt can I feed it?Wait 7–10 days. Their fangs need time to harden (they turn from white to black).
Why is it shooting poop at the glass? This is their primary defense mechanism. It's a sign they want you to back off!
