🏗️ Cage Requirements & Structural Standards
Savannah Monitors (Varanus exanthematicus) are large, active, highly fossorial (burrowing) lizards from the savannas and grasslands of sub-Saharan Africa. They require massive amounts of space and incredibly deep substrate.
Minimum Enclosure Dimensions:
- Juveniles: 40-Gallon Breeder (Temporary grow-out enclosure only).
- Adults (2.5+ feet): 8' L x 4' W x 4' H (96" x 48" x 48") is the absolute minimum standard for a single adult. Most keepers must custom-build these enclosures out of sealed wood or PVC.
Provide heavy, immovable enrichment items like large hollow logs, massive cork tubes, and secure flat rocks (like slate) directly under the basking lamps. Any decor must be secured, as a powerful adult monitor will easily bulldoze lightweight setups.
Savannah Monitors are fiercely territorial and solitary. NEVER cohabitate them. Housing two monitors together will inevitably lead to severe stress, competition for basking resources, missing digits, or deadly fights. Keep them housed individually at all times.
☀️ The UVB Standard (Critical Requirement)
Savannah Monitors are diurnal, full-sun baskers. High-quality UVB is absolutely essential for them to synthesize Vitamin D3, metabolize calcium, and prevent deadly Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD).
Ferguson Zone Classification:
- Zone 1: Shade dwellers.
- Zone 2: Partial shade dwellers.
- Zone 3: Open or partial sun baskers.
- ★ Zone 4 (Savannah Monitors): Full sun baskers. Mid-day UVI target of 2.6 to 7.4 (Maximum 8.0).
UVB Requirements:
- Type: T5 HO (High Output) Linear Tube.
- Strength: 12% to 14% (Arcadia Desert) or 10.0 / 14.0 (Zoo Med ReptiSun).
- Coverage: The bulb should span the length of the basking zone and overlap with the intense heat lamps.
📐 The "Mesh Factor" (Lighting Precision)
Enclosure screens block considerable UV radiation. If resting the fixture over mesh, the basking surface should be approximately 12-14 inches below the light. If mounted inside a custom wood/PVC enclosure, increase the distance to 18-20 inches to avoid severe UV burns, depending on the exact bulb strength.
Note: Replace T5 bulbs every 6–12 months, as the UV output degrades even if the bulb remains visibly lit.

Nighttime Heat Standards:
A nighttime drop is highly beneficial. If your home drops below 70°F, utilize a Ceramic Heat Emitter (CHE) connected to a thermostat to provide lightless ambient heat. Savannahs require total darkness at night to sleep properly.
🦗 Nutrition: The Insectivore Mandate
This is the most misunderstood aspect of Savannah Monitor care. In the wild, they are INVERTEBRATE SPECIALISTS. They eat orthopterans, millipedes, snails, and scorpions. They are NOT strictly rodent eaters.

Feeding an adult Savannah Monitor a diet of strictly rodents and fatty ground turkey is a DEATH SENTENCE.
In captivity, monitors fed rodent-heavy diets rapidly develop massive obesity, lethargy, and Fatty Liver Disease (Hepatic Lipidosis). They evolved to extract energy from lean, hard-to-digest invertebrates. Rodents should only be offered as a rare treat (e.g., once a month), not a staple.
Note for Juveniles: While adult monitors have highly robust digestive tracts, monitor babies fed hard-shelled worms (mealworms/superworms) in excess can occasionally face impaction risks. Stick to softer roaches and crickets for young monitors.
Calcium & Vitamin Supplementation
- Every Feeding: Dust insects with pure Calcium (NO D3).
- Weekly: Dust with a Multivitamin powder containing low D3.
🌿 Substrate Safety & Deep Burrowing
Savannah Monitors are obligate burrowers. In the wild, they dig extensive tunnel networks to escape the African heat and find high humidity. Without deep substrate, they will become chronically stressed, dehydrated, and susceptible to shedding issues.
Recommended Options (Must be 1.5 to 2 Feet Deep!):
- The Monitor Mix: A 70/30 or 60/40 mix of organic topsoil (fertilizer-free) and washed play sand. This mix holds moisture incredibly well and retains the structural integrity of their heavy tunnels without collapsing.
Maintenance: Pour water directly into the bottom layers of the substrate (often via a PVC pipe driven into the dirt) so the deepest dirt remains damp (80% humidity) while the top layer remains dry. This mimics the arid savanna surface and the humid underground burrow.
- Pure Sand or Walnut Shells: Will not hold tunnels, completely dries out the monitor leading to stuck shed, and causes lethal impaction when ingested.
- Reptile Carpets / Tile / Newspaper: Completely inappropriate for an adult monitor. It strips them of their natural digging behaviors, leading to severe behavioral issues and self-mutilation (rubbing their snouts raw against the glass).
- Wood Chips / Bark: Does not hold tunnels and poses a massive impaction risk if accidentally swallowed during aggressive feeding responses.

Why is my monitor so fat?

What is Target Training?

Why is its nose bleeding/rubbed raw?
Hover to Reveal"Snout rubbing" occurs when an enclosure is too small, lacks deep digging substrate, or the monitor is highly stressed and trying to escape. Upgrade the enclosure and increase substrate depth immediately.
Why does it flick its tongue so much?
