Hornworm Feeding Guide
Hydration & High-Growth Management
📐 Step 1: Size Matters
Hornworms grow up to 4 inches. Feed them while they are small enough for your pet to handle. They can grow 1/2 inch per day at room temperature!
🧊 Step 2: Growth Control
To keep them small longer, store them in a cool area (55-60°F). If you want them to grow faster for larger pets, keep them at 80°F+.
🧤 Step 3: Gentle Handling
Since they have no hard shell, use your fingers or soft-tipped feeding tongs. Being too rough can cause the worm to rupture.
🙃 Step 4: Upward Housing
Always store the cup lid-down or vertically. Hornworms need to climb onto the mesh to eat and to keep their waste away from the food.
The "Golden Rule" of Hornworms
- Never feed wild hornworms: Wild ones eat nightshades (tomatoes/tobacco) which makes them toxic. Only feed captive-bred worms.
- Prevent Dehydration: Ensure the worm has access to the provided "chow" until the moment of feeding to maximize hydration for your pet.
- Watch for Molds: If waste (frass) accumulates at the bottom, tap it out daily to keep the habitat clean and healthy.
