Tokay Gecko Care Guide

TOKAY GECKO

The Complete Care & Husbandry Guide

Whether you are bringing home a wild-caught import or a captive-bred morph, this interactive guide contains everything you need to help the "Pitbull of Geckos" thrive.

🏆 VITAL STATS & DIFFICULTY
Experience Level: Intermediate / Advanced
Max Size: 10–14 Inches
Lifespan: 10–15+ Years
🏗️ Cage Requirements & Structural Standards

Tokay Geckos (Gekko gecko) are strictly arboreal lizards that require significant vertical space for climbing and thermoregulation.

Minimum Enclosure Dimensions:

  • Juveniles: 12" x 12" x 18" (minimum).
  • Adults (10-14 inches): 18" x 18" x 36" is the absolute minimum, but 24" x 18" x 36" is the standard.

Provide heavy cork bark tubes, thick bamboo, and dense artificial or live foliage to provide visual barriers. Front-opening enclosures are necessary to avoid approaching them from above.

⚠️ TANK MATE & HANDLING WARNING

NEVER house two male Tokay Geckos in the same enclosure. They are highly territorial and will fight to the death. While a male/female pair can occasionally cohabitate, keeping them solitary is always the safest option. Furthermore, these geckos are extremely defensive and have a powerful bite. They are display animals, not handling pets.

☀️ The UVB Standard (Beneficial & Recommended)

While often labeled as strictly nocturnal, Tokay Geckos are actually crepuscular and frequently expose parts of their bodies to light during the day (cryptic basking). Proper UVB prevents Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) and regulates their circadian rhythm.

Ferguson Zone Classification:

Reptiles are categorized by their UV requirements. Identification of the correct zone is vital for health:

  • ★ Zone 1 (Tokay Geckos): Crepuscular / shade dwellers. Mid-day UVI target of 0.4 to 0.7 (Maximum 1.0).
  • Zone 2: Partial shade dwellers (Occasional baskers).
  • Zone 3: Open or partial sun baskers.
  • Zone 4: Full sun baskers (Extreme desert species).

UVB Requirements:

  • Type: T5 HO (High Output) Linear Tube.
  • Strength: 2.4% to 7% (e.g., Arcadia ShadeDweller).
  • Coverage: The bulb should span no more than 1/2 the enclosure length, placed over the highest basking branch.

📐 The "Mesh Factor" (Lighting Precision)

Enclosure screen meshes filter out significant portions of UV light. Your mounting distance depends entirely on the mesh density:

  • Over-Mesh: Standard screen tops can block 30% to 50% of UVB. With a 7% bulb on top of the mesh, the optimal basking branch should be 8-10 inches below the screen.

Note: Replace T5 tubes every 6–12 months, as UVB output decays even while the bulb remains lit.

Pro Enhancement: Heavy Foliage. Because they are Zone 1 reptiles, it is crucial that the lower 2/3 of the enclosure is heavily shaded. Ensure there are cork tubes or broad leaves where the gecko can retreat into complete darkness during the day.
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity Gradients
Requirement Specification
Basking Surface Temp 90°F - 95°F
Ambient Warm Side 82°F - 85°F
Cool Side Ambient 75°F - 80°F
Humidity Baseline 60% - 80% (Spikes to 90% at night via misting)
CRITICAL LOWER LIMIT NEVER BELOW 70°F (Night)
CRITICAL UPPER LIMIT NEVER ABOVE 98°F (Ambient)
Measurement: Use a digital hygrometer/thermometer combo with probes. Stick-on analog dials are notoriously inaccurate and should be avoided.

Nighttime Heat Standards:

Tokay Geckos require a modest temperature drop at night to simulate their native tropical environment. If your home stays above 70°F at night, no extra heat is required. If temperatures drop lower, use a Ceramic Heat Emitter (CHE) or Deep Heat Projector (DHP) hooked to a thermostat.

🚨 THE "RED LIGHT" WARNING

DO NOT use "Nighttime Red Bulbs" or "Blue Moonlight" bulbs. Reptiles CAN see this light. It disrupts their circadian rhythm (sleep cycle) and can lead to chronic stress and a weakened immune system. At night, your gecko needs total darkness.

🦗 Nutrition & Supplementation

Tokay Geckos are voracious insectivores. In the wild, they will eat almost anything they can overpower. While some will occasionally lick prepared Crested Gecko Diet (CGD) or mashed fruit, their diet must consist primarily of live, gut-loaded insects.

Feeding Schedule

Age Group Frequency Quantity
Juveniles Daily As much as they will eat in 10 minutes
Adults Every 2-3 Days 5-8 appropriately sized insects

🦗 The Live Insect Roster

Variety is key to preventing nutritional deficiencies.

Category Insects
Daily Staples Discoid Roaches, Dubia Roaches, Crickets, Silkworms.
Supplemental Mix-ins Hornworms (great for hydration), Black Soldier Fly Larvae (NutriGrubs).
Rare Treats Waxworms (high fat), Pinky Mice (strictly for breeding females, otherwise highly obesity-inducing).

Calcium & Vitamin Supplementation

Because they are nocturnal/crepuscular and heavily reliant on prey for nutrition, proper dusting is critical.

How to Apply Supplements:
  • The "Shake and Bake" Method: Place live insects in a plastic bag or cup with a pinch of powder. Shake gently until insects are lightly "ghosted" in white. Feed immediately using feeding tongs to avoid getting bitten.
Supplementation Schedule (If using UVB):
Age Group Plain Calcium (NO D3) Calcium with D3 & Multivitamin
Juveniles Every feeding (except vitamin day) 1x per week
Adults Every feeding (except vitamin day) 1x every two weeks

*If you are NOT using a UVB light (not recommended), you must use Calcium with D3 at every feeding.

⚠️ WARNING: MEALWORM & SUPERWORM RISKS

While healthy ADULT Tokay Geckos can safely consume mealworms and superworms, they must be fed responsibly. Their thick, chitinous exoskeletons can be difficult to digest. Do not use them as a primary staple due to their high fat content and potential impaction risks if overfed.

NEVER feed hard-shelled worms to young juveniles. Their smaller digestive tracts cannot break down the shells, which frequently causes a FATAL IMPACTION (gut blockage).

🌿 Substrate Safety & Selection

Because Tokay Geckos require high humidity, your substrate must be able to absorb and hold moisture without molding.

Recommended Moisture-Retaining Options (Safest):

  • ABG Mix (Atlanta Botanical Garden): The gold standard for tropical setups. Drains well and supports live plants and isopods.
  • Coconut Coir / Husk: Holds humidity exceptionally well and is resistant to mold.
  • Organic Topsoil & Sphagnum Moss: A 70/30 mix of fertilizer-free topsoil and moss provides excellent moisture retention.
  • Paper Towels: Ideal for quarantine, monitoring health in juveniles, or simplistic hospital setups (must be changed frequently as they do not hold ambient humidity well).

Bioactive Setups:

Highly recommended for Tokays. Adding a "Cleanup Crew" of tropical isopods and springtails to an ABG-style substrate will break down gecko waste and prevent mold in the high-humidity environment.

🚨 FATAL SUBSTRATE HAZARDS: DO NOT USE
  • Pine or Cedar Shavings: The aromatic oils and phenols in these woods are highly toxic to reptiles and will cause fatal respiratory infections.
  • Reptile Carpets: These act as a breeding ground for bacteria in high humidity. Additionally, the fabric loops frequently snag their delicate toes, causing traumatic injuries.
  • Sand: Completely inappropriate for a tropical species. It will not hold humidity and causes lethal impaction if swallowed.

🎮 Interactive FAQ Flashcards

👆 Hover or tap the cards below to reveal the answers!

📢

Why is my gecko barking?

Hover to Reveal

The Tokay gets its name from its loud, distinctive "To-kay!" mating and territorial call. Males are particularly vocal during the night.

🩸

What do I do if it bites me?

Hover to Reveal

Do NOT pull away. Pulling will cause deep lacerations. Either wait for it to release, run lukewarm water over its head, or place a drop of rubbing alcohol near its mouth to force it to let go.

⚔️

Can I keep two geckos together?

Hover to Reveal

Never two males. They will fight to the death. A male and female can sometimes be housed together if the enclosure is massive, but solitary housing is highly recommended.

😮

Why is its mouth wide open?

Hover to Reveal

This is a classic defensive threat display. "Gaping" is their way of telling you to back off before they lunge and strike. Respect their space.

🦎

How does it stick to glass?

Hover to Reveal

Their toe pads are covered in millions of microscopic hairs called setae. These hairs create intermolecular forces (van der Waals forces) that allow them to adhere to almost any surface.

💧

Does it need a water bowl?

Hover to Reveal

Provide a small elevated water dish, but don't be surprised if they ignore it. Arboreal geckos primarily hydrate by licking water droplets off leaves and glass after misting.

✂️

Why did its tail drop off?

Hover to Reveal

This is called autotomy. It's a defense mechanism used to distract predators. The tail will regenerate, though the new tail will look slightly different than the original.

🤝

Can I tame or handle my Tokay?

Hover to Reveal

It is very difficult. With extreme patience, thick gloves, and hand-feeding over many months, some become tolerant. However, they are best kept as beautiful display animals.
